Takeaway:

French fries might be the main attraction for many but tater tots are the underrated, unsung hero of the potato family. They are nothing less than delicious. What makes them even better is that you don’t have to go out to enjoy them. You can make them from the comfort of your own home.

What are Tater Tots?

Tater tots are basically potatoes that have been cut up into bite sized pieces. They can be baked, fried, or cooked in an air fryer. Just know that if you are getting tater tots at a fast food place, they are most likely going to be fried, just like a french fry would. This is why making them at home is a healthier option.

Tater Tots vs Fries: What’s the Difference

The main difference between tater tots and fries are the way they are cut. Fries are sliced, while tater tots are in smaller, bite sized pieces. Also, tater tots are coated in a breading that often consists of flour.

Which is Healthier?

There are alternatives that exist now that did not exist before. Mainly, you can expect tater tot calories to be on par with the amount of calories in french fries.

Are Tater Tots Gluten-Free?

Tater tots can be gluten-free. However, they usually are not. This is because of the breading. They are often made with things like wheat flour and other gluten derivatives. You need to make a conscious effort to seek out tater tots that are gluten-free.

Ingredients:

  • 4 large potatoes
  • 1/2 tablespoon flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Choice of cooking oil (vegetable, canola, etc)

Instructions:

Step 1: Begin by preheating the oven to 400°F (204°C).
Step 2: Peel the potatoes.
Step 3: Place the potatoes into boiling water.
Step 4: Allow the potatoes to boil until you are able to barely put a fork through them. (Don’t let them become too done, or else they will be mushy.)
Step 5: Use a ricer to finely shape the potatoes while they are still hot, fresh out of the pot.
Step 6: Add flour, salt, and pepper to a frying pan. Add 1/4 of an inch of the oil you prefer to cook with. Bring to a medium heat.
Step 7: Form the potatoes into small balls before dropping them into the frying pan. Allow them to become slightly golden.
Step 8: Take the potatoes out of the frying pan and drain them on paper towels.
Step 9: Bake the tater tots in a single layer on a greased sheet for about 15 minutes. (You can also freeze the potatoes at this point, prior to baking, in order to use them for later.)
